Welcome to the Heart of Friendship Crochet A-Long
In this next 2 weeks you will be making the centre square, Love and Creation.
♥ These hints and tips are not the pattern, they are exactly what they say they are, hints and tips to help you, as you make this Afghan/Blanket.
♥ If you would like to join us, please go to the Intro post for links to purchase the pattern and information on yarn requirements.
♥ I begin all my patterns with a magic ring, you can use a chain 4 and slip stitch to form a loop if you prefer, but here is how I do my magic ring, and how I make sure it never ever comes undone.
♥ I also fasten off with an invisible join, again if you don’t know how, here is a video to help you.
♥ When I change colour at the beginning of a new round, I always use a standing stitch, it is very easy to learn, and means you will have no “skinny” stitches made of a chain start.
♥ If I am continuing with the same colour, and the start calls for a ch-3 [counts as dc]
I often use a starting dc.
♥ This pdf shows the colours I used in the Pinks and Purples blankets, there is also a blank chart for you to write in the colours you wish to use.
♥ Large Centre Square ~ Love and Creation
♥ Rounds 3 and 4 make up the folding single crochet. I have come to realise that I use this stitch in nearly, all my designs, so you may guess it is one of my favourites.
Here is a link to a video tutorial, that may help you if you are new to this stitch.
♥ From round 8 we start to make our central heart, using stitch markers will really help to get your front post double treble stitches in the correct place.
Here is a video to help with making front and back post stitches.
♥ You will notice in the pattern, with longer stitches, there is a hint on how many times to yarn over before starting the stitch. E.g.: [yo 3 times]
♥ As you continue to make the heart larger you will notice a 3D effect starting to emerge at the centre, creating a star. Do not worry if your work gets wobbly!
♥ Round 17, the fan round!
You may do this in just one colour if you like, but it is so effective when done using two colours, don’t worry about the wobbles, but do make sure you give a gentle pull on the carried yarn before you change colours, as this will keep everything neat and tidy on the back of your work.
♥ Round 20 is where we start to form the large star. Do make sure you follow all the hints for stitch placement, as you work through the next few rounds, and get those stitch markers out again.
Also if your tension is tight, you may need to make an extra yarn over before statring the front post stitches or it may pull your square out of shape.
♥ Round 21 is Crossed dc, here is a link to a video tutorial.
♥ Round 26 is the cable stitch, here is a video to help you.
♥ Round 28 and we start to make a square, again be mindful of your stitch count, and use markers where you need to.
♥ Round 29,30 and 31, Puff Stitch, here is a video link.
♥ Once your square is complete, I suggest blocking it, this will help to make your work look fantastic, and also make joining much easier.
♥ The rest is fairly, straight forward, with hints and tips already in the pattern. But do remember if you need help, please ask.
Many thanks to the CAL – Crochet A Long on Facebook for hosting this cal.
We would love to see photos of your progress, please feel free to share in the Pippin group or in my own group Helen’s Hookaholics.
See you in two weeks for the next part of Heart of Friendship.
